New Girl on the Block

Didn't I say this place was rad? More on the Hip Hop Stormtrooper in an upcoming post...

Hi, I'm Pamela, and I'm the New Girl 'round these parts. You may also call me Intern Extraordinaire. I'll answer to either.

I'm the latest addition to the Curious Provisions team, and I must say- only a week in, and this internship has already exceeded my expectations. Granted, this is my first internship, and I'm not exactly fresh out of college (I got my MA back in 2009), so I'm probably not what Curious Provisions had in mind either when they posted a listing for the position on The Barefoot Student. It was no matter, however, as by the end of our first meeting we parted ways with "see ya tomorrow".

This place is rad. And I mean rad. The people, the environment, the product, everything. Situated in the King Plow Arts Center is the Curious Provisions HQ where all the magic happens. There is a showroom open to the public. The production area is just behind it. And above in the loft? That's the office. Natural light filters in, Thumpers vibrate the space with a variety of music as they are tested, and the whole facility feels like a neighborhood. In fact, as I write this, I'm sitting outside the door on a bench, enjoying the breeze, and someone from the space two doors down just came out for a walk with his two dogs.

In the short time I've been here, I've been blown away by the whole production. The owners, Javier and David, are incredible. There is another owner, Russell, who I look forward to meeting. If he is anything like Javi and Dave, he must be awesome. The technicians working on the Thumpers- Simon, Ben, and Joseph- are warm and super patient with me while I ask questions over their shoulders like "so, you solder that wire with that other thing over there?"

You may be wondering why on earth I, as an office intern, would be asking the technicians about soldering. Well, Javier and David are passionate about this company, and they are truly making this internship experience beyond valuable by including me in every aspect. One day, I watched as a Thumper was made, start to finish. Another day, I was photographing for the website and writing copy. Two days later you could find me purchasing materials while brainstorming marketing ideas with the owners.

I share this personal side of Curious Provisions with you because they are an personal company. They make a product they love, and they care about the user experience. They care about the production experience. They care about absolutely every aspect of enjoyment and creativity that comes along with one of their Thumpers. These guys- David, Javier, Russell, Simon, Joseph, and Ben- aren't some unknown phantoms behind a mass produced product. They are the people who make the individually-crafted Thumpers come alive.

There is a reason the Thumpers all come with a guarantee and a 1-year warranty. That reason is that every one of these boomboxes is their baby, lovingly crafted, and made to last.
